How long can I barbecue on gas?

We are regularly asked how long the BBQ works on a gas cartridge, gas canister or a gas bottle. This depends on a number of things:

The type of gas cartridge, gas can or gas bottle you use
The type of BBQ you use; a large barbecue naturally consumes more gas than a small model because they often have a larger gas burner with a more powerful flame
Weather conditions; cold weather consumes more gas than warm weather; you need more power (and thus gas) then
The position of the gas tap; do you grill on full gas, medium or on the lowest setting
